Karl Mailand – Trumpet
Karl Mailand is an active freelance trumpeter and teacher in the Washington DC, area. He currently manages and owns Capital Band, a professional organization which provides patriotic entertainment for events in and around the DC area. He served for over 27 years in The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own.” As a trumpeter in the Ceremonial Band and Herald Trumpets, he performed for high level ceremonies at the White House and around the world, to include performances with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. Karl holds degrees from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (BM) and the Florida State University (MM).
Chuck Seipp – Trumpet
National Brass Quintet trumpeter Chuck Seipp is Associate Professor of Trumpet at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia. He was Visiting Professor of Trumpet at Texas Tech and prior to that served 32 years with The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” as Sergeant Major and Group Leader of the Concert Band. Chuck toured and recorded throughout Europe with world-renowned organist Diane Bish—appearing regularly on her television series. Through CJ Seipp Music Publications, he markets his brass arrangements, many of which have been recorded by the Canadian Brass. Chuck’s recording of his published “Wedding Book” proves to be a valuable resource for organists and trumpeters. Chuck is also active as a clinician and soloist performing regularly across the country. Dr Seipp holds degrees from Kansas University and Catholic University. Chuck is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
Mitch Spray – Trombone
Mitch Spray is a native Ohioan and a 1981 graduate of Ohio University. After a year as a high school band director, he joined the US Army as a musician. He has served in the 74th Army Band, the US Continental Army Band, as a trombone instructor at the Armed Forces School of Music and at the US Army Band “Pershing’s Own”. In the Pershing’s Own, he served as a trombonist, Drum Major and as the unit’s Command Sergeant Major. Mitch retired from the Army in 2014 and is a photographer for the Pohanka Automotive group. He plays trombone in several ensembles in the Washington DC area and plays electric bass in the worship band at church. He and his wife Becky live in Manassas and have two children and 5 grandchildren.
Rob Craven – Horn
Rob Craven has been performing with the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” since 1998. Prior to joining the band, he held a position with the international orchestra, La Filharmonica de Queretaro based in the Capitol region of central Mexico. Rob is currently an instructor at The Catholic University of America, with previous positions at Georgetown and Mary Washington University. He has a Bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music, and a Master’s from The Juilliard School.
David Porter – Tuba
Dr. David Porter, retired CMSgt tubist of 24 years, The United States Air Force Band, Washington D.C. is a Tennessee Tech University, University of New Mexico, and George Mason University graduate. David is GMU Adjunct Faculty for Brass Methods, Applied Tuba, Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble and Instructional Staff with “The Green Machine” Pep Band. He is also Principal Tuba—McLean Orchestra, Faculty—Masterworks Festival, Principal Tuba, National Brass Quintet and teaches 35 students.
